Theatre of Cruelty
Today in class we devised 3 role plays about possible ideas we could use for our final production of theatre of Cruelty!
Our pieces had to be based on the idea that the aim of theatre of cruelty is to face the audience with a very harsh and raw vision of the truth that they wouldn’t necessarily want to see.
For our group, I thought of the idea of cults. This idea came from both a personal anecdote and a psychological study done by Milgram, which I studied in class. The personal anecdote happened this summer, when my friends and me went to the beach for a camping, and found a stack of sticks pilled up together and a chicken without a head from the night before. In front of our eyes was the evidence of a cult and their rituals. This came to mind in class as it correlated with the idea of the praising for the evil, and to the question of “what makes a group of people sacrifice lives like that?”. It was quite a dark theme, however I just used it as a stimulus for this idea. The psychological study that I crossed referenced into this new theme of work was that of “Obedience to authority”, in which people were told to give electric shock to another group of people if they got answers wrong just because “the experiment requires you to move on”. Of course, ethical concerns came into play and the people where not really given electric shocks, but the experiment showed that a lot of people managed to give out shocks of 400 volts (close to a deadly dose if held for long enough) just because a figure of authority such as an experimenter or a doctor said so. This made me think of the idea, “how far would someone go to obey?”. I mentioned this idea to my group, and we came up with our own god, which Katy named “AZUL”.
From this we created a skit showing how sometimes in a family that has created very strong and conservative boundaries of belief, some people that think differently are not accepted, and therefor they rebel. We showed a catholic Family praying at the dinner table, and then showed how Katy stood up and said she believed in Azul. The family members, insulted as they were tried to chase her around. We used split screen and cross scenes to move into the future, showing how the rebel (Katy) had now started her own cult. The family members ( Lloyd, Dury and me) were now her disciples. Rejection had made her ambitious for power, to create her own family and get people to believe in her, and so the scene showed how we sat in the floor and agreed to sacrifice our blood in order to show our commitment and faith to Azul. From here, we managed to transmit the idea that people follow others sometimes for fear, sometimes for the need of belonging and sometimes for not being alone/ an outcast.
Mrs Hilman really liked our idea, and so did the rest of our classmates, as we thought that it was a topic that could be taken in a lot of ways!
Further inspiration: The video of Cults:
To all help in our idea, we made a google document!
Assignment 1: Make commandments to create premises for our belifs/ our cults beliefs. We got inspired by the 7 commandments, and therefore we had to each thing of three.

SYMBOLISM:
For our logo, i wanted to apport any ideas i could think of. Playing around with our new name in class"Children of the eternal Happiness" i thought that the diction in the word was very positive. I looked into old symbolism in propaganda for inspiration, but because four cult is that of children, and we are in the search of happiness, the Nazi sign couldn't do much. when thinking of Happiness i though of yellow, as it reflects light- and therefore hope. Also, cease our leader is called Celestine, that is a shade of Blue (light blue0 and therefore i assessed that component to be crucial in our logo. also, blue goes well with the idea of children, as it is a soft color widely used for baby clothes and uniforms.
These are the ideas i thought of!!:
(IMAGES NEEDED/ KATY HAS THEM ALL)
I thought of including a Sun, again to reinforce the idea of hope and prosperity, light and happiness through the rays. i played around with the shapes, from a star, to an actual Sun and a Diamond.
All the logos were liked, however the final decision was to keep the diamond!!
